Crimson Bears honor seniors with Tri-Valley victories
     In their season-ending home series during senior appreciation weekend, the JDHS Crimson Bears boys delivered dominant performances in both matchups against the visiting Tri-Valley Warriors, defeating them 67–45 Feb. 27 and following up with a 66–43 victory the following night at the George Houston Gymnasium. The two games showcased balanced scoring and effective defense while honoring the contributions of the senior players in their final regular-season contests. Seniors honored include co-captains Joren Gasga and Brandon Casperson, Elias Dybdahl, Kurt Kuppert, Tyler Frisby, Noah Ault, Christian Rielly, Ryland Carlson, Veron Brewer, and Tyler Williams. JDHS will next face conference rival Ketchikan in the Region V tournament hosted at JDHS this week in a best-of-three series.

Crimson Bears complete season sweep of Kayhi
     The Juneau-Douglas Crimson Bears boys basketball team completed a season sweep of Southeast rival Ketchikan High School on Feb. 20-21. On Friday, the Crimson Bears implemented a stingy defense to win 53-41 over the visiting Kings. Senior Joren Gasga led JDHS with 19 points, followed by fellow seniors Elias Dybdahl (14) and Kurt Kuppert. On Saturday, the JDHS offense took the spotlight in a 76-52 victory. Gasga again led JDHS with 28 points, followed by Dybdahl (14), senior Brandon Casperson (11) and junior Logan Carriker (9). The Crimson Bears will close out the regular season Feb. 27-28 during Senior Appreciation Night against the Tri-Valley Warriors. JDHS is currently 11-9 overall and 4-0 in conference play.

Crimson Bears split series at home versus Sitka
     Juneau-Douglas High School boys delivered a gritty 56–49 win over Sitka at home Feb. 6, overcoming earlier road defeats to the Wolves. JDHS was led in points by seniors Joren Gasga (24) and Brandon Casperson (11). In the rematch the following night, Sitka flipped the script in a 60–30 contest, using early pressure to jump out to a first-quarter lead. Gasga and junior Logan Carriker were the top scorers for JDHS with 6 points each. Saturday's loss snapped a three-game win streak against Southeast Alaska opponents. The Crimson Bears will take to the road this week to face another familiar Southeast opponent in Mount Edgecumbe. JDHS's record now sits at 9-7 overall, and are undefeated (2-0) in conference play.

Crimson Bears sweep KayHi in conference matchup
     Juneau-Douglas High School’s Crimson Bears opened their Southeast Conference road trip in Ketchikan with a 56-45 victory Friday over the Kings. JDHS Senior Elias Dybdahl led the team with 21 points, followed by Senior Kurt Kuppert (17) and Junior Logan Carriker (10). The Crimson Bears were again victorious Saturday, 53-48. Carriker led the team in scoring with 15 points, followed by Seniors Brandon Casperson (14) and Joren Gasga (12). The Crimson Bears will next face Sitka at home Feb. 6-7.

JDHS goes 1-2 at T-Bird Classic
     The JDHS boys basketball team delivered a statement performance at the East Anchorage T-Bird Classic, beginning with a hard-fought 80-60 loss to Colony that featured balanced scoring in spite of a tough early deficit against the Knights. The Crimson Bears responded emphatically in their second game, dominating Bartlett 74-41 behind 27 points from Joren Gasga and double-figure efforts from Kurt Kuppert (12) and Logan Carriker (11) as JDHS built a big lead early and never relinquished it. In a later game the same day against host East Anchorage, JDHS competed strongly but fell 84-70, with Gasga leading the team in scoring (20) and solid contributions from Elias Dybdahl (15), Kuppert (13) and Carriker (13) in a spirited showing against the three-time defending state champions.

Crimson Bears show grit versus Sitka
     In their two-game series at Sitka High School, the Juneau-Douglas Crimson Bears battled hard but came up short against the Wolves. On Jan. 9, Sitka was able to hold off a fourth-quarter rally with a 66-54 victory. The next night, Crimson Bears again showed grit, opening with a first-quarter lead before Sitka pulled away and secured a 55-37 win behind a strong second half effort. In other action, the JDHS JV team went 1-1 and C Team 2-0 against the Wolves. Looking ahead, the Crimson Bears will shift their focus to the Thunderbird Classic tournament in Anchorage this week, where they will face a new slate of challengers and look to build momentum.

Crimson Bears victorious at CCC
     The Juneau-Douglas High School boys basketball team defended their home court to win the 2025 George Houston Capital City Classic championship. The Crimson Bears defeated Petersburg High School 60-50 on Dec. 27, and then notched wins against Kake High School (72-20) and Monroe Catholic (60-44) in a Dec. 30 doubleheader. JDHS senior guard Joren Gasga was named tournament MVP. Gasga also was named to the all-tourney team along with fellow JDHS seniors Kurt Kuppert and Elias Dybdahl, and junior Logan Carriker. The Crimson Bears will take to the road to play Sitka Jan. 9-10.

Bears to defend home turf during CCC
     The Crimson Bears will look to defend their home turf in front of a packed and rowdy crowd this week when the George Houston Capital City Classic kicks off Saturday, Dec. 27. Action begins at 1pm with the JDHS girls team, and concludes with a 7pm matchup between the JDHS boys and Petersburg High School. No games Sunday but there will be a 3pm shooting contest (open to public). Games resuming Monday, with the JDHS boys facing Kake and Tuesday against Monroe Catholic. Both games start at 7pm.

Crimson Bears kick off 2025-26 season in Vegas
     The Crimson Bears Boys Basketball Team kicked off the new season Dec. 18, heading to Las Vegas for the Tarkanian Classic. The team went 2-2 over three days of action, notching wins against Wasatch (UT) and Sunnyside (CA), and losing to CI Gibson (Bahamas) and St. George (Canada) in overtime. The Bears will look to build off that experience during home holiday action while hosting the George Houston Capital City Classic Dec. 27-30.

Alaska High School Basketball Set to Begin

Palmer Showdown
     The varsity had another weekend of growth and experience, this time at the Palmer Showdown. The Crimson Bears came up short in the championship game against the host team, getting beat by 2 points (66-64). The path to the championship game was one of improvement, though. The Bears "avenged" an overtime defeat from the GH CCC to Soldotna by beating them 64-49, and then played a very balanced "team" game in a comfortable win against Homer, 71-46. The championship game was played against a tough and talented Palmer team, and the Bears had a chance to win in the final minutes.

The Crimson Bears will be tested at the Colony Basketball Classic against three of the best teams in the state this coming weekend.

Ketchikan
     The Ketchikan Kings came to Juneau and swept the hometown varsity in the George Houston Gymnasium this weekend, giving them a solid grasp on 1st place in the conference. The Crimson Bears look to regroup and improve as they turn an eye towards the Palmer Showdown this coming weekend.

George Houston Capital City Classic
     The Crimson Bears finished the tournament 1-2, including a victory against Cordova in the opening game, before falling to Soldotna by 2 in overtime, and losing to Federal Way by 13 in regulation. Federal Way (WA) earned the championship trophy with their hard fought battle against Juneau-Douglas. Up next, conference games against Ketchikan.

     New graphics and a plaque commemorating the life and times of Coach Houston have been installed to complete Phase 2 in the George Houston Gymnasium. Come to a game and check it out.

Mark Your Calendar... Tryouts are Coming Soon!
     Wednesday, December 4th will be the first day of official practice (tryouts) in Alaska. The George Houston Gymnasium will come to life with the bouncing balls and the squeaking of shoes in just over a month. George Houston Gymnasium - Update
     Phase 1 of the renaming of the George Houston Gymnasium (GHG) is complete. The work included some changes to the main court's paint scheme, including the return of the red keys, and the addition of Coach Houston's signature. The next phases are in the works. Phase 2 should be finished in November and Phase 3 is slated for the summer of '25. Come on down to the GHG and check out the latest!

     At the December 12th school board meeting, in a unanimous decision, it was decided to honor Coach Houston with the naming of the gym at JDHS. Moving forward, the Crimson Bears will compete in the George Houston Gymnasium. Happy Thanksgiving... Get Ready for Tryouts!
     This is an exciting time of year for Crimson Bears fans! The official start of the Alaska High School Basketball season is right around the corner. Tryouts will happen November 29-30. Freshmen/Sophomores tryout from 6:30-8:30pm and Juniors/Seniors tryout from 7:30-10:00pm. Meet in the JD commons. Also, in order to tryout, make sure that you have a current physical and all your information is added to Planet High School/Big Teams. Rest In Peace Coach Houston - Thank You for Everything
     It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of former head coach, George Houston, at the age of 72 on the night of October 26th. He died peacefully in Seattle at Virginia Mason with family by his side after a brief, but valiant battle against an illness commonly known as Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis (formerly Wegener's granulomatosis). Please check back for information on when and where a public service will occur.
